More than 20,000 low-income West Virginia households now have access to fresh fruits and vegetables as area farmers markets open for the season.
SNAP Stretch, a program aimed at empowering individuals and families to make the most of their EBT/SNAP dollars while bolstering local economies, has returned for the season at farmers markets, such as Capitol Market in ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä, The Wild Ramp in Huntington and the Fayette County Farmers Market in Oak Hill.
Funded by the West Virginia Food and Farm Coalition, SNAP Stretch allows EBT/SNAP users to swipe their EBT card at a participating market and the amount they receive will be doubled. Their EBT/SNAP dollars can be spent on an eligible SNAP purchase, and the doubled dollar can only be spent on fruits and vegetables. To support healthy habits, families with children and seniors will receive a triple match.
“SNAP Stretch offers a simple yet impactful way to stretch grocery budgets further, ensuring that nutritious, locally grown foods are accessible to all — this is really a ‘win-win’ program. It’s a ‘win’ for low-income seniors and families and a ‘win’ for West Virginia farmers and food businesses,†West Virginia Food and Farm Coalition Executive Director Spencer Moss said in a release.
West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Kent Leonhardt highlighted the important role of SNAP Stretch in West Virginia, noting its effectiveness in reducing food insecurity and supplying local, nutritious food to residents.
“Since its launch in 2018, the program has experienced significant growth, underscoring its vital contribution to meeting the nutritional needs of our community,†Leonhardt said in the release. “We know healthy food equals a healthier population and SNAP Stretch provides fresh, quality food to those who may have previously lacked access to it.â€
During the 2024 West Virginia legislative session, SNAP Stretch did not receive funding in the state budget, but the West Virginia Food and Farm Coalition is advocating for funding during the May special session.
