The Wednesday morning assembly at Nitro’s Rock Branch Elementary School was special. Around 200 students were dressed up and ready to sing for their guests, the gym was decorated in blue and yellow, and Babydog even trotted in for an appearance.

CHARLESTON — State assessment scores released this week show school districts across West Virginia are showing some progress in increasing proficiency rates in math and reading, though fewer than half of students in the state are proficient.
