Board member Tracy White addressed those in attendance, explaining that there were administrative cuts being made to balance the budget as well. Last year, when Grandview Elementary closed, an assistant superintendent position was eliminated.
“We can’t keep cutting our classrooms without making sacrifices at the top, too. I know that has never been said publicly. If I’m not supposed to say that, I’m sorry,†she said.
After the meeting, White confirmed that the administrative position was eliminated last June “prior to discussing any further plans of consolidation.â€
Students from Mary Ingles Elementary will join students at Belle Elementary to form a new school. If approved, Malden Elementary and Midland Trail Elementary could also be consolidated into the new school, which is planned to be built on the former Dupont Junior High School site in Dupont City.
The board is set to vote on these closures next week.
Last month, the school board applied for funding from the School Building Authority to support the consolidation project. If the request is approved, construction could begin soon, with current buildings closing — and the new school expected to open — for the 2028-29 school year.
Additional consolidation hearings are scheduled as the board prepares to vote on the potential closures of two more schools. Public comments will be heard before votes are cast at each meeting.
