New traffic patterns are popping up around the Jefferson Road/Kanawha Turnpike intersection in South ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä.
Tuesday morning, a new roundabout opened for drivers to navigate the intersection, and two-way traffic is now flowing over the Jefferson Road overpass bridge.
The work is part of a $47 million project to widen Jefferson Road to five lanes between Corridor G and U.S. 60 (MacCorkle Avenue) in South ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä. The project includes eliminating the CSX rail crossing by utilizing the new bridge and roundabout. The project also adds a paved bicycle path parallel to Jefferson Road, and over the overpass.
One-way northbound traffic on the overpass bridge was opened in late May.
The bridge will now carry one lane of traffic each, north and south, as contractors complete the final phase of construction and continue work on the roundabout and connections between Corridor G and U.S. 60.
The roundabout is designed to eliminate left-hand turns that caused congestion on the old road alignment.
For more information, including an animated video of how the new roundabout will work, visit the project website at jeffersonroadwv.com.
Prior to the project’s authorization, the 1.7-mile road had an accident rate four-times higher than the average crash rate for similar roadways across the state, and a 2016 traffic study concluded that — by 2030 — traffic congestion on the road would overwhelm the road’s capacity.
The road is a primary access route between South ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä and Southridge Center and the Shops at Trace Fork shopping malls.
