My social work mentor in the 1990s was a will and pleasure appointee who lost his job after administrations changed. He did OK for awhile but could not go along with a cut in badly needed child welfare funds and had to move on.

He believed, in effect, that we could not justify building a swimming pool when our kids needed food and medicine.
