When Donald Trump was sworn in as president, he took an oath to “faithfully execute the office of the president of the United States and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.â€
So far, he has abused the powers of his office, filled his administration with unqualified department heads, weaponized the federal agencies he hasn’t yet dismantled, damaged the U.S. credibility and standing in global diplomacy and ignored federal and Supreme Court orders. That hardly adds up to keeping the oath he took.
As for the Constitution, if he’s not ignoring it, he’s exploring ways to bypass or rewrite it. For example, the 22nd Amendment clearly states that “No person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice.†Trump says there are ways he can maintain the presidency in 2028 and beyond. It’s not hard to figure out he’ll zero in on the word “elected†and one way or another, seek to ensure there is no election. He plans to just keep on keeping on.
Members of Congress also take an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.†Most are failing miserably as they enable an enemy of the Constitution on the domestic front. They are supposed to be our representatives in the second branch of the federal government, but they ignore constituents who contact them with concerns. (They will, however, acknowledge your existence by putting you on the mailing list for their self-serving newsletters.)
There are peaceful protests against the actions of the Trump/Elon Musk presidency taking place in all 50 states. Trump refers to them as riots. Yet, the violent attack on the Capitol of Jan. 6, 2021, that we all witnessed live, he calls a “protest by patriots.â€
I’m reminded of a quote by Booker T. Washington: “A lie doesn’t become truth, a wrong doesn’t become right and evil doesn’t become good, just because of acceptance by a majority.â€
Someday, I hope, the majority will not be so accepting.
