Women interested in pursuing a career in the construction trades have a new opportunity this fall. West Virginia Women Work’s Step Up for Women Construction Program is now accepting applications for its free 12-week training course, beginning Monday, Aug. 25, in both Dunbar and Morgantown.
The pre-apprenticeship program offers hands-on instruction in carpentry, welding, plumbing, electrical work, and other essential construction skills. In addition to technical training, students receive job readiness coaching, employment support, and industry-recognized certifications such as OSHA 10, Forklift, and First Aid/CPR/AED.
“Our free Step Up for Women Construction program teaches you the skills employers want,†said program representatives. “In just 12 weeks, participants gain the tools, confidence, and credentials needed to launch a career in the skilled trades.â€
The Step Up for Women Construction Program is a project of West Virginia Women Work, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing education, employment, and economic equity for women across the state. For 25 years, the organization has helped train and place women in high-wage, high-demand careers—many in fields where women have historically been underrepresented.
Graduates of the program benefit from a supportive learning environment, one-on-one mentoring, and help connecting with employers in the construction and manufacturing sectors. According to WV Women Work, graduates contributed more than $728,000 in wages to the state’s economy in 2024 alone.
“West Virginia needs skilled workers, and we’re building them,†said a spokesperson for the organization. “Our goal is to close the skills gap and give more women the opportunity to support themselves, their families, and their communities through meaningful careers.â€
The local classes are held at 501 19th Street in Dunbar. Enrollment is open to women of all backgrounds, with no prior experience required. Space is limited and early application is encouraged. For more information or to apply, visit wvwomenwork.org or contact the organization directly.
