“We can’t accurately do our job and disburse resources if we don’t know crime is happening,� he said.

Crimes reported using the form must have no suspect, no material evidence and no video of the crime. Theft under $1,000, breaking and entering a car and destruction of property under $2,500 are the three misdemeanor crimes that are reportable through the form.

Bailes said residents may think someone rifling through spare change in their car isn’t a big enough deal to report, but “really we don’t mind. That’s our [job].�

Once a report is submitted, it is reviewed by CPD detectives. If the case has enough evidence to be solvable, a detective may call to follow up.
