West Virginia bolstered its defensive line ranks, which were hurt by outgoing portal exits and the departure of Dante Stills, with the addition of transfer Fatorma Mulbah. He committed to the Mountaineer program on Jan 12.

A graduate of Penn State, Mulbah (6-3, 296 lbs.) is hoped to help the Mountaineers in the interior of the defensive line. He has signed a grant-in-aid, and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Mulbah joins Devin Carter, Davoan Hawkins, Ja'Shaun Poke, Montre Miller, Michael Hayes and Kole Taylor as the official signees who are now enrolled at WVU for the spring 2023 semester, and eligible to participate in spring practice.

WVU has one more known transfer, safety Keyshawn Cobb, who has verbally committed and is expected to sign a grant-in-aid with West Virginia.

West Virginia football head coach Neal Brown has been trying to expand the roles of tight ends in the Mountaineer offense the past couple of seasons, and reiterated that plan on the first day of the early signing period last week. He and the WVU program took a step in that direction on Christmas evening when Kole Taylor announced that he will be joining the team.

Taylor announced his entry into the transfer portal from LSU on Dec. 8. He saw his playing time at LSU decrease this season, and decided to look elsewhere for a chance to reverse that track.

At six feet, seven inches and 250 pounds, Taylor certainly has the size to be both a quality blocker and a big target in the passing game, although he was not thrown to often in the Tigers' offense. In three seasons at LSU, the Grand Junction, Colorado, native started seven of the 32 games in which he appeared, catching 17 passes for 159 yards and one score.

As the 2020 season does not count against eligibility, Taylor will have three years in which to play his final two seasons.

“This isn’t something I took lightheartedly … I’ve loved my time at LSU," he told the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel. "I think the biggest thing is that I want to go somewhere that fits best for me as a player, I like the team, I love my teammates and coaches … It was something I needed to do for my career and future … This was a long time coming, not an overnight decision.â€

During Taylor's freshman season, he earned notoriety when his shoe was pulled off and thrown by Florida's Marco Wilson late in LSU's game against the Gators with the score tied. The resulting penalty gave LSU a first down and led to its game-winning 57-yard field goal.

Taylor is the third transfer to verbally commit to WVU this month. Cornerback Montre Miller and wide receiver Ja'Shaun Poke, both of Kent State, committed earlier in December.

KOLE TAYLOR LSU SOPHOMORE SEASON (2021)

KOLE TAYLOR LSU FRESHMAN SEASON (2020)

Played in seven games, starting twice … Caught six passes for 36 yards … Biggest catch of career thus far was a 4-yard reception on third-and-10 in fourth quarter in win over Florida … On that play, his cleat came off and Florida defender tossed it down field, resulting in an unsportsmanlike penalty … The result was a first down, which extended LSU’s game-winning drive … Had three receptions for 11 yards vs. Florida and followed that with two catches, including a 20-yarder, the following week in win over Ole Miss … First career catch came against Texas A&M.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WV News) — It is almost eerie to think about how Wednesday's Christmas came early for college football recruits across the country, including at West Virginia University, and crossed paths with the untimely, unexpected death of a Pittsburgh Steeler icon, the author of "The Immaculate Reception." Franco Harris.

There were so many messages in the feelings throughout football that ranged for the joy of the young players taking the next step toward trying to carve out their niche in the game that was once ruled by Franco and his Italian Army.

Innocents, they are, filled with more dreams than accomplishments, about to face their first real tests as they travel down life's paths. Some will succeed, more will fail. The most will land in between. In that way football and life are as one.

Some, perhaps, have not even heard of "The Immaculate Reception," which is to celebrate its 50th anniversary this week.

Harris was to be honored for the play that beat the Oakland Raiders in the most improbable, nearly impossible of fashions, a Terry Bradshaw pass seemingly broken up by Jack Tatum only to have the ball ricochet downfield where Harris scooped it up at shoe-top level and ran it in for the game winning score.

That miracle on the final play of the game did not win a Super Bowl but it gave impetus to a Super Bowl franchise. It was the Steeler's first playoff win ever. It injected an aura into the Steeler bloodline and lifted Harris to a place in history that would only grow over the years.

Without that play our world would not become as good a place as it became, because Harris, despite being a member of the hated enemy in Morgantown, where he was part of the yearly muggings Penn State inflicted upon the Mountaineers, became a caring, giving member of the community, that loved him back; not just for the catch, but for all he had done within the community.

Somewhere out there, in this recruiting class, there is probably the next Franco Harris, but first we have to understand that they have a different world to exist in.

They will be tempted with money and with transfer pressures, they will have to endure a lesser role as Harris did at Penn State, being not the star of those great Joe Paterno teams, but the fullback whose first chore was to block for Lydell Mitchell.

If there was a message in that play that Harris would transmit to this year's recruiting classes everywhere, it was this:

"No matter how hopeless something appears ... you don't ever give up. Anything can happen."

That he said a few of years ago in a USA Today article on the anniversary of the catch, noting it was a message that had been ingrained in him by Paterno:

"Go to the ball! Go to the ball!" Paterno would say over and over.

"I know it's hard to believe that was in my head," Harris said. "That's one thing that I did when I first went to practice with the Steelers. When you hear things like that as (a college) player, it kind of just goes through you. But when I got to the next level it was 'What are the things I need to do now that will make me better, that can make difference?'"

He thought of what Paterno said and now visitors to Pittsburgh are greeted in the city with a statue of him making "The Immaculate Reception."

We all have an effect on others and that goes for the new players, the ones Neal Brown will try to mold into winners and champions and people.

He had spent a hectic few days in the final days of recruitment leading up to signing day and there was much going through his mind on Wednesday morning when he awoke and turned on ESPN and learned of Harris' death.

"That's a historical play," Neal Brown began when asked what he would like his recruits to take out of Harris and the play he made. "First off, signing day is a weird day for a coach because you have this uneasiness about signing day.

"Like the night before is uneasy. Even the guys you talked to, and it's good, because it's never good until it's signed and delivered. You get up early, but your work is done by 9 a.m. So I had ESPN in my office and I enjoyed watching the coverage of Franco Harris.

"The thing that really stood out is watching and hearing what his former teammates said about him. That, to me, if the people you played with speak highly of you, then that's really good. For a guy like him who was a leader and a tough guy — he might not be the most popular or the most liked, but he was respected, which is the most important thing."

So many people live their lives for money, for fame, for fun ... but when it comes time to tally it all up, what you have done, how you have done it and what it has meant to those closest to you ... well, that's respect, and it's the one thing Brown believes his new players should gun for as they move their time at WVU and beyond.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WV News) — Intense rivalries, such as the Backyard Brawl, which picks up where it left off 11 years ago with West Virginia winning, 21-20, over arch-rival Pitt, are often won on one play.

It may not the final play of the game, but often is.

It is a last-second field goal by Bill McKenzie or a Chad Johnston scramble and impossible touchdown pass to a wide-open Zach Abraham in 1994, but just as likely it may come early, such as the early handoff from Johnston to Amos Zereoue for his first collegiate carry that broke for 69 yards and a touchdown and told Pitt it was going to be a long day, as most 34-0 games are.

A year ago, Pitt was built to win such a game, relying on big plays from first-round pick quarterback Kenny Pickett to All-American wide receiver Jordan Addison, who caught 100 passes for 1,593 yards and 17 touchdowns.

But there was no Backyard Brawl last year and now the Panthers go into the game without Pickett, throwing passes for the Pittsburgh Steelers, or Addison, who transferred to USC to play for Lincoln Riley.

While it's expected that Pitt will still have big play capabilities, WVU has pointedly gone after creating a big play offense. It comes from the philosophy of new coordinator Graham Harrell, who has promised his team would be trying to score on every play — not possession, play — and with a new quarterback and with big-play potential at wide receiver from Bryce Ford-Wheaton, Kaden Prather and Sam James.

We too often place all of the responsibility for explosive passing plays on the quarterback, but there are two parts to such plays and the catch is more likely to be overlooked than the throw.

Yet, we all know, that the most famous Super Bowl-winning moment came to be known simply as "The Catch" a leaping back of the end zone grab of Joe Montana pass by Dwight Clark that made the San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl champions of 1981.

Great catches don't just happen. There is an art in roping in the 50-50 ball that is up there for the offensive player and defensive player to battle over, coming at the end of a sharply run route and an accurate throw.

We return now to last year's 38-31 WVU victory over Iowa State, a game in which Ford-Wheaton proved himself to be such a big-time, clutch receiver, first grabbing a 28-yard scoring pass from Jarret Doege while covered two-on-one in the right corner of the end zone.

Then he turned in another score to tie the game at 24 with what most believe to be the Mountaineer catch of the year, leaping backward just inside the back of the end zone and somehow coming down not only with the football but with both feet inbounds.

The play was rated No. 9 by ESPN last season.

What is the secret to making such a play ... a play that ranks in the greatest of catches in WVU history.

"The easiest part is going up for it with me being 6-3 and being bigger than most defensive backs," Ford-Wheaton said. "Going up, grabbing the ball in your hands is kind of easy ... but the DB is going to let you come down with the ball?"

Indeed, grabbing the ball is one thing, taking permanent possession of it quite another thing.

"The technique is to grab it and tuck it immediately. A lot of people don't understand how hard that is."

The defender, you see, is taught to rip it from the receiver's hand any way you can.

"The good part is you can learn and get better at it," Ford-Wheat said.

And, with the arrival of Harrell, that was something he and the other receivers began working on and more goes into it than you may think.

It's probably begins with strength coach Mike Joseph making it a part of the wide receivers' workouts.

"He really gets me right with certain workouts. We work a lot of grip strength and then we just drill the JUGGS," Ford-Wheaton said.

The JUGGS, of course, is a gun that accurately shoots passes to receivers in practice so they cam work over and over on things with wearing out QBs and with far more consistency in putting the ball where they want it.

The introductory course came in the spring when Harrell came in and got away from so much precision, possession passing to taking shots down the field, something the wide receivers enjoyed immensely.

"No question, we're going to take a lot of shots and try to score a lot of points," the young, promising Prader said. "We've had a lot of deep balls this spring, and I mean a lot. We haven't come down with all of them, but we have been working the over-the-shoulder ball. We know we can go up and catch it. We've got a lot of big guys."

To get deep and in position for the over-the-shoulder ball, you need speed. Most think that's nature's call, but again Joseph, the strength and conditioning coach, become Mother Nature's helper.

"In the weight room, Coach Mike has worked on our speed a lot," Prather admitted. "He wants a lot of runners. We're more of a fast team this year."

The result of it all?

"It's going to be more exciting. It won't be a boring game with a whole bunch of runs and things like that," Prather said.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WV News) — How often from 2010 to 2012 did these words — or words like them — echo through the mountains of West Virginia:

"Geno Smith back to pass, looks downfield, he finds Tavon Austin open, he slips a tackle, cuts back, to 30, to the 20, to the 10. Touchdown, Tavon Austin."

Or:

"Third and 12. Smith is looking, looking, there's Stedman Bailey. He's covered but Smith threads it through a tiny hole to Bailey. He makes a leaping catch, an impossible catch. First down, West Virginia."

They were the heart and soul of an offense that was almost, if not completely, the equal of the Pat White/Steve Slaton offense just more than a decade earlier.

And so it is fitting today that they together are being inducted in the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame.

They join five other Mountaineers — men's basketball star Kevin Jones, women's basketball record breaker Donna Abbott, cross country/track star Marie-Louise Asselin, rifle trailblazer Marilee Hohman and rifle coach Marsha Beasley — in the 2022 class.

The induction ceremony will take place on Sept. 17 before the Mountaineers play Towson in the football home opener.

You can't mention Smith without Austin and Bailey. They go together like peanut butter and jelly, Abbott and Costello, like Samson and Delilah.

They told the world that West Virginia football had changed. Gone was the Don Nehlen era and his power running game; gone was the Rich Rodriguez era and the spread option. Dana Holgorsen brought in his version of the Air Raid, and it would probably have gone down in the annals of college football had he figured out a way to stop the other team.

As an example, WVU rode Smith's arm and Austin and Bailey's pass-catching and unmatched ability to make yards after the catch to 513 points in 2012, matching the school record set by White and Slaton's 2007 mark. But while that 2007 team went 11-2 and reached the point where it was in line to play for the national title; the 2012 defense gave up 495 points.

That led to a 7-6 season despite being a team that scored 69 points on Marshall, 70 on Baylor, 48 on Texas, 49 on Oklahoma and 59 on Kansas.

But if that took the glitter off the triumvirate of performances turned in by Smith, Austin and Bailey, it did nothing to diminish it within the state, where people often would ask each other, "Did I just see what I just saw?" on plays from the threesome.

The signature game, of course, was the one in which they announced to the Big 12 that there was a new kid on the block.

West Virginia's very first Big 12 game at Mountaineer Field saw both teams put up video game numbers.

Consider some of them:

Smith completed 45 of 51 passes — that's no typo, just six incompletions. He threw for 656 games and eight touchdowns.

Austin caught 14 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns.

Bailey caught 13 passes for 303 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Last year, WVU was led in touchdown receptions by Sam James and Winston Wright with 5. Bailey caught that many in one game.

"It did feel like one of those classic Texas shootouts," Smith said after the game. "That's kind of what the Big 12 is all about."

And it was what Smith, Bailey and Austin were all about.

It's probably fair to say that there never has been a player at WVU like Austin. Some could catch. Some could run. But Austin also was as good a kick and punt returner as WVU ever had.

And he was as elusive as a national championship has proven to be for West Virginia.

Austin with a football in his hands turned the game into two-hand touch. He was so slick that tackling him was almost out of the question. He'd spin, he'd sidestep, he'd jump out of bounds.

They didn't use the statistic yards after contact where he was concerned because there seldom was contact.

Just think about this — Austin was mostly a receiver, but Holgorsen, faced with an Oklahoma team that was hard to beat, decided to switch up on them and moved Austin to running back.

On that day, Austin set the school record for yards rushing in a single game with 344.

Again, how many yards really is that? Well, in 2019, Neal Brown's first season as coach, Leddie Brown led WVU in rushing for the season with 367 yards.

That's just 23 more yards than Austin rushed for in one game.

Austin is the only player in NCAA history (think about the dimensions of that) to score a touchdown four different ways in one season (catch, rush, kick return and punt return). Too bad he didn't recover a fumble for a TD, too.

He passed Avon Cobourne and Noel Devine to set the school's all-purpose yards record with 7,286 — about a mile and a half — and passed Jock Sanders to set the career record in receptions with 288 and went by David Saunders to become the school's career receiving yards lead with 3,413 yards.

And don't forget, WVU had Bailey lining up on the other side from him.

It is difficult to describe what Bailey was like. His hands were like fly paper. If a football flew into it, it was stuck there.

He was big enough to deal with any defensive back, fast enough to run with them, smart enough out-fox them.

He, like Smith and Austin, worked at his trade, put all that was within him into what he was doing and probably got the most of his ability.

And there's little doubt in this mind that had he not been victimized in a random shooting while sitting in his car with his children that he would still be playing in the NFL — as Smith and Austin are — and probably getting ready to head off into a coaching career.
