GLENVILLE, W.Va. (WV News) — Coach Kim Stephens and her Glenville State Lady Pioneers are ranked No. 1 in the nation.
In the weekly poll released by the WBCA on Tuesday, GSC climbed two spots to claim the top ranking. They had been No. 3 the previous two weeks.
Glenville State currently sports a 16-0 overall record and leading the nation in scoring at 101 points per game and a margin of victory of 38.3 points per game. The next-closest team is at 21.9.
GSC also leads the nation in steals per game (16.1), and forced turnovers (29.0).
Glenville's first defense of the No. 1 ranking comes against Alderson Broaddus on Wednesday.
FAIRMONT STATE MEN MOVE TO NO. 7: The Fighting Falcons cracked the top ten in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches national rankings on Tuesday. FSU is also ranked No. 16 in the latest release of the D2SIDA National Poll.
The Falcons improved to 15-2 on the season and 10-2 in the Mountain East Conference with wins over Davis & Elkins and Frostburg State last week to extend their winning streak to eight games.
West Liberty joined Fairmont State in the top ten with a ranking of No. 8 and the University of is receiving votes as well in the updated release.
No. 7 Fairmont State (15-2, 8-2 MEC) faces West Virginia State (13-5, 8-3 MEC) on Wednesday night in Institute.
Women's Basketball
WEST VIRGINIA 66, TCU 54: WVU set a program record, holding TCU to one point in the first quarter, and Esmery Martinez netted her third consecutive double-double in the victory at the WVU Coliseum with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Martinez was joined in double figures by freshman guard JJ Quinerly, who tallied 11 points. It marks Quinerly’s fourth game with 10 or more points this season. Fifth-year senior center Blessing Ejiofor finished with a game-high 11 rebounds to pace West Virginia on the glass.
Additionally, senior forward Kari Niblack tallied seven points in the game and has 990 tallies in her WVU career. She needs 10 points to become the 38th 1,000-point scorer in program history.
“We started the game well. We finished the game well,” WVU coach Mike Carey said. “We executed well at the end of the game. In between, we fouled too much. We could never get into a rhythm because we kept fouling and putting them at the foul line. So, we could never get out. That’s disappointing, but I thought the last four minutes, five minutes of the game, we executed very well. We got the ball where it needed to be.”
West Virginia (10-7, 3-4 Big 12) held TCU to 0-of-9 from the field in the first period and also forced 11 Horned Frogs turnovers in the quarter.
Next up, West Virginia plays host to No. 11 Baylor on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The contest against the Lady Bears is West Virginia's annual "I Belong" event, which celebrates diversity and inclusion in the Morgantown community.

WILSON TO FIGHT FOR TITLE: Professional welterweight boxer “Sergeant” Cody Wilson (10-3) of Fairmont will fight Tre'Sean Wiggins (12-5-3) of New York, NY this Saturday at the Packard Music Hall in Warren, Ohio.
The bout will be live streamed at donking.com
The bout is scheduled for ten rounds and is for the vacant WBA/NABA welterweight title. Wilson trains at the Tommy Thomas Boxing Club in Clarksburg with veteran trainer Tim Wheeler and is being promoted by Jerry Thomas.
Toughman
RANDOLPH IN PRO BOUT: Toughman Contest fans will be treated to a professional bout on Saturday, Jan. 29 between Bridgeport’s Zach Randolph (5-1-1) and Brandon Clark (2-2) from Columbus, OH.
The light heavyweight bout is scheduled for six rounds. Randolph trains at the Tommy Thomas Boxing Club in Clarksburg.
