WALDORF, Md. -- For the second straight game, Southern Maryland showed the team’s offensive power with a 16-1 win over the ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Dirty Birds on Wednesday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
After defeating the Dirty Birds 18-7 on Tuesday in the first game of the three-game series, the Blue Crabs scored six runs in the first inning and seven in the fifth while scoring single runs in each the second, third and sixth innings to run their winning streak to six straight. They have won nine of their last 10 games.
The Dirty Birds scored a single run in the first inning on Chad Sedio’s single that scored Benjamin Blackwell.
The Blue Crabs then scored the next 16 unanswered runs.
Edison Suriel started on the mound for the Dirty Birds and he lasted 2 2/3 innings allowing eight earned runs on six hits and eight walks.
Brenden Medoro entered in relief and pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up seven earned runs on eight hits. Lance Lusk pitched the sixth and gave up the final Blue Crabs run on two hits.
Frank Moscatiello pitched an inning of relief and struck out two before giving way to Jonathan Soto, who pitched a scoreless eighth.
Six Blue Crabs batters had multihit games, led by Giovanni Digiacomo, who was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Brett Barrera had one hit and four RBIs to help starting pitcher Ian Kahaloa earn the win.
Kahaloa pitched seven innings and gave up three hits to the Dirty Birds while striking out seven and allowing one earned run.
The Dirty Birds finished the game with four hits -- all singles -- with Blackwell, Sedio, Alsander Womack and Demetrius Moorer getting those knocks.
Southern Maryland improved to 27-20. The Dirty Birds dropped to 23-24.
