There was a lot of excitement around Week 1 of the West Virginia high school football season. We saw some great action not only here in the Kanawha Valley but statewide also.
It’s hard to pick just one storyline from the opening week of the season. So, I’ve compiled a list of storylines I think were some of the better ones from last week.
Hoover combo fun to watch
The Herbert Hoover Huskies and Independence Patriots squared off Thursday evening in Kanawha County. It was the first time the two programs had met since the 2022 Class AA state championship game in Wheeling.
Independence put its foot on the gas following Hoover’s opening-drive score, and the Patriots went into halftime leading 23-7.
The Highlanders brought back plenty of talent from a season ago and should be in the running for the Class AAAA crown.
Hurricane too is right there in the mix. The Redskins welcomed back Noah Vellaithambi and Tyshawn Dues on offense. Those two will be fun to watch throughout the season for coach Donnie Mays.
More excitement in Week 2
Here are some games involving local teams that will be fun to watch in Week 2: Winfield at Herbert Hoover, Huntington at Martinsburg and Spring Valley at Hurricane.
