Local county commissions, volunteer fire departments and farm-based and rural small businesses are recent recipients of federal and state funding to support their individual projects.
Gov. Jim Justice announced last month the awarding of more than $5.5 million in West Virginia Community Corrections Grant program funds to 30 projects around the Mountain State.
The grant program funds will be used to assist local communities in the establishment and continued operation of community corrections programs.
The West Virginia Community Corrections Grant Program is intended to provide a means for communities to develop, establish and maintain community-based corrections programs to provide the judicial system with sentencing alternatives for those offenders who may require less than institutional custody.
The funds are administered by the Justice and Community Services Section of the West Virginia Division of Administrative Services.
Grant funds were awarded to the following local counties:
Fayette County Commission — $196,280
Kanawha County Commission — $155,000
Putnam County Commission — $130,000
These funds will be utilized for the continued operation of community corrections programs in each of the respective counties.
Justice also announced two additional awards, including $150,000 for the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services, which will be used hire a statewide Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner project coordinator, and $100,000 for the West Virginia CASA Association, which is responsible for providing resources, support and technical assistance to 10 local CASA programs throughout West Virginia.
According to an Aug. 30 release from the office of Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., FEMA funds have been awarded to 29 fire departments, six first responder organizations, five city governments, and West Virginia University.
Local FEMA fund recipients and the amounts that were awarded to them include:
$999,328.57 to the Clendenin Volunteer Fire Department, Clendenin
$734,485.70 to the Teays Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Scott Depot
$92,548.57 to the Bancroft Community Volunteer Fire Department, Bancroft
$56,412.38 to the Culloden Volunteer Fire Department, Culloden
$46,914.81 to the City of Nitro.
The grants were awarded through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program to support local fire departments and first responders.
Nearly $586,000 from the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development program will be dispersed across eight projects across West Virginia, including several Kanawha and Fayette county entities.
The funding is designed to support the state’s farmers, ranchers and rural small businesses.
The State of West Virginia in Kanawha County will receive $156,594 to provide technical assistance on post-harvest handling.
The Kanawha County-based West Virginia Food and Farm Coalition will receive $99,038 to supply technical assistance to rural grocers to expand value-added products and agricultural products.
Capitol Market in ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä will receive $95,000 toward upgrades to the outdoor market space with mobile storage, equipment, and the development of supporting programs to attract and retain farmers and producers.
In Fayette County, New Roots Community Farm in Fayetteville will receive $60,400 to support the development of small and emerging agricultural businesses.
Other USDA Rural Development funding recipients in the state are The 1982 Foundation in Calhoun County ($95,289), the Roane County Chamber of Commerce in Spencer ($39,282), West Virginia Women Work in Monongalia County ($23,354), and Shepherd University ($17,000).
