The Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center has announced another expansion, this one doubling the size of its Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center on the Marshall University South ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä campus.
In addition, MAMC was just awarded more than $1 million by the U.S. Economic Development Administration to equip the new space with the latest manufacturing technology, according to MAMC Director Derek Scarbro.
With 4,280 square feet of additional space, Scarbro said MAMC will be able to better serve existing clients as well as accommodate additional entrepreneurs and manufacturers, with more room for technical training and new technology.
“The additional space will allow us to offer new manufacturing technology in the coming months that is not found in this area of Appalachia. Technology that will allow West Virginia businesses to innovate, operate more efficiently and grow their operations,†Scarbro said.
Renovations on the former library space at the MU South ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä campus will begin this fall and are expected to be complete by spring, Scarbro added.
“The library recently moved to the adjacent campus building,†he said.
MAMC’s South ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center opened in 1997 as a satellite of the Huntington-based Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing to better serve manufacturers across the state.
Today, it offers a variety of advanced technology for leased use, including:
Metal, large-scale and full-color 3D printers
A water jet cutting device
Swiss turn CNC lathe
Computer-controlled mills
5-axis CNC machining center
The machining center is staffed by experienced machinists, technicians and mechanical engineers to assist clients.

Over the past 10 years, Kin Ship Goods, 617 Tennessee Ave., ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä, has grown from a small business to a West Side staple, known for its unique designs and quality products. Kin Ship Goods is a lifestyle brand founded by two artists, Dan Davis and Hillary Harrison.
“We moved back to West Virginia from Louisville, Kentucky, in 2014 and opened the doors to Kin Ship in the fall of 2014,†Harrison said. “We had $200 in our bank account and no back-up plan. Luckily, the community has supported us since we opened and 10 years later, here we are.â€
Harrison said the business specializes in hand-printed apparel and home goods.
“All of our designs are done in-house and are inspired by rabble rousers, mountain mornings and dusty keepsakes,†she said. “We are also inspired by scrappiness and making something from nothing. The resourcefulness of the people we grew up around in West Virginia and Kentucky influences all that we do.â€
“In addition to our shop,†Harrison said, “Our goods are sold in shops across the country.†They also sell their merchandise online.
For the 10-year celebration, Kin Ship Goods has brought back some of its classic designs from the first year along with three new designs.
“We’re also proud to introduce our collaboration beer with Short Story Brewing inspired by one of our classic designs,†Harrison added. “The ‘Small Towner’ beer is available at Short Story locations.â€
