Early voting dates

Early, in-person voting runs through Nov. 2. According to the Secretary of State’s Office, voters may vote an early ballot at their county courthouse, an annex or a designated community voting location during normal business hours during the week. Early voting must also be conducted between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on the last two Saturdays before the election. Check with the applicable county clerk's office to determine your early voting location options. 

Early voting is available at the following locations in Kanawha County Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through Nov. 2:

• Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office detachment: 903 Cross Lanes Dr., Cross Lanes
• Belle Town Hall: 1100 E. Dupont Ave., Belle
• St. Albans City Hall: 1499 MacCorkle Ave., St. Albans
• Sissonville Library: 1 Tinney Lane, ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä
• Elkview Community Center: 1078 Main St., Elkview
• Marmet Town Hall: 9403 MacCorkle Ave.
• Nitro Police Department: 497 First Ave. South, Nitro

Requesting an absentee ballot

Absentee ballots were mailed out beginning Sept. 20.

According to a news release from the Secretary of State’s Office, the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is the close of business on Oct. 30. But eligible voters should apply as soon as possible “to ensure any delays in the Postal Service do not affect their ability to vote.�

Eligibility to vote absentee in West Virginia requires you to meet three basic criteria:

• Confinement, which includes incarceration or a hospital or nursing home stay. ±·´Ç³Ù±ð:ÌýConvicted felons cannot vote until they complete parole/probation requirements.
• Not being present in the county during in-person voting
• A permitted reason/excuse

°Õ³ó´Ç²õ±ðÌýreasons/excuses include:

• Illness
• Injury
• Working away from home
• Personal or business travel
• Attendance at college or other place of education   

Eligible voters must apply for an absentee ballot with their county clerk.

Absentee ballot dates

±õ³¾±è´Ç°ù³Ù²¹²Ô³ÙÌýdates to remember when returning an absentee ballot:

• Nov. 4: Deadline for hand-delivered absentee ballot to the clerk’s office
• Nov. 5: Absentee ballots received electronically from eligible voters accepted (absentee ballots submitted electronically by eligible military and overseas voters and eligible voters with physical disabilities are accepted by close of polls)
• Nov. 6: Absentee ballots without postmark accepted
• Nov. 12: Absentee ballots postmarked by Election Day accepted

Voters who utilize an absentee ballot can also track that ballot online via the Secretary of State’s office. Similarly, provisional ballots can also be tracked though the Secretary of State's office. Provisional ballots are cast in situations where a voter's ballot is challenged for a variety of reasons which can include not having proper identification at the polling location; issues with a signature on the poll book not matching the one on the registration card; registration record not available when voting. 

Election Day voting

Registered voters may also cast their ballot on election day, with polling locations open across the state from 6:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., Nov. 5. 

The deadline to register to vote in the general election was Oct. 15.
