SPRING CONCERT: Hurricane Civic Chorus presents a spring concert, “Music for the Way Home,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, 2848 Putnam Ave., Hurricane, West Virginia. Admission is free.
NEW BABIES: Three newborns were recently added to Lewis Memorial Baptist Church families. They include Killian Jacob Albright, born to Jacob and Morgan Albright; Lydia Elizabeth Hadlock, daughter of Dalton and Meredith Hadlock; and Millie Scott Sizemore to Zach and Torie Sizemore. May these little ones bring much joy, happiness and laughter to the families as they are being led to follow the Lord.
LECTURE: The third lecture in the annual Little Lectures Series and Betsy K. McCreight Lecture in the Humanities sponsored by West Virginia Humanities Council was conducted May 17. David Ervin presented the lecture, “Raised to the Westward: The 13th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line,” at the MacFarland-Hubbard House headquarters, 1310 Kanawha Blvd. E., .
HONOREES: Tammy Midkiff and Tara Benwell of West Hamlin Elementary School were recently honored. Tammy was named Teacher of the Year and Tara was Service Personnel of the Year. Their dedication, hard work and care for students and teachers aren’t unnoticed as they make a big difference every day. Congratulations to these outstanding honorees for the well-deserved recognition.
CONCERT: Cecil I. Walker Jazz Series hosts Hot 8 Brass Band at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at Clay Center, . New Orleans’ own, born and raised there, has toured in France, Japan, Italy, Spain, England, Finland and Sardinia. Tickets are $33.
DEPUTIES: Kanawha County Commission officially swore in three new deputy sheriffs to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office. Added to the force in early May were Deputy Jacob Gareston and Deputy Jeremy Bailey, joining from St. Albans Police Department, and Deputy Cody Champlin, rejoining from Police Department. The experience and public service commitment these police officers share certainly make a difference. Welcome to the police force, gentlemen/officers.
PERFORMANCE: Amanda Smith and Relative Acoustically perform from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 23, at Emma Rae’s Steakhouse, 1101 Hospital Dr., Hurricane, West Virginia.
CHOSEN: Rebecca Erwin with Putnam Career and Technical Center was recently selected as the 2026 SkillsUSA Region 3 Advisor of the Year. Representing West Virginia and Region 3 of the USA, she now has a chance to be named national advisor of the year in June. Congratulations Rebecca on this well-deserved honor and best wishes on your upcoming recognition.
FAIRE: The first-ever Renaissance Faire is offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at Valley Park, Hurricane, West Virginia. The event, benefitting American Cancer Society, features live entertainment, combat demonstrations, artisan vendors, immersive medieval experiences, themed activities and more. Admission is $10 ages 18 and above; $5 ages 11-18; and free ages 10 and younger.

CHUCKLE: An elderly woman died last month who had never married, she requested that no male pallbearers be used. In her handwritten instructions for her memorial service, she wrote, “They wouldn’t take me out while I was alive, so I don’t want them to take me out when I’m dead.”
