Kanawha County Board of Education member Tracy White announced her resignation Monday evening during a Local School Improvement Council meeting at Nitro High School.
White, who was first elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022, said in a social media statement on Tuesday, choosing to resign was difficult but necessary due to personal and family challenges.

“This decision didn’t come lightly and it certainly didn’t come in haste,†White wrote. “I’ve been heartbroken the last month … I feel I can no longer be the board member I promised I would be, so I’m choosing to step down.â€
White cited a series of hardships in recent years — including the death of her mother and aunt and her husband’s health struggles — as reasons she could no longer continue in the role.
“Through each and every one of those things, I pushed to be there, to show up with a smile, to do the job I promised I could do,†she wrote. “However this time I can’t push anymore. My family needs me as we enter yet another storm. I need me awhile.â€
During her tenure, White said she tried to be a visible and approachable board member, often volunteering at schools and community events.
White also expressed gratitude to voters for electing her twice, noting that she did not accept donations during her most recent campaign.
“I’m a firm believer if you show up, genuinely talk to people, show them you care, that they will put their faith in you,†she wrote.
What's next
The BOE has not announced what its plan will be to fill White's seat. KCS Communications Director Chris Williams said it will be discussed at its regular meeting Thursday at 5 p.m. at the board office, 200 Elizabeth St.
