Natural gas leak closes Piedmont Elementary in ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä; Here's what we know

Prior to students arriving Thursday morning, Chris Williams, communications director for Kanawha County Schools, said in a text, carbon dioxide alarms went off in the school. The ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Fire Department and a KCS maintenance team responded, and the maintenance team found and stopped the leak, Williams said.

No staff were injured or sickened from the gas leak.

"However the levels inside the building were still outside the normal range," Williams said. "And it would not be safe to have people inside the building. The maintenance team is working [Thursday morning] to repair the crack that caused the leak."

Some students had been dropped off for school while the leak was being fixed, according to a parent on the scene, but they were kept outside and were bused home beginning at 7:45 a.m.

Williams said there was no online learning Thursday since the day was canceled at the last minute.

Piedmont Elementary School, 203 Bradford St., teaches around 300 pre-K through fifth grade students.
