A new bench in front of Peak Living Services Veterans Lifeway Center on Leon Sullivan Way honors the sacrifices of veterans and their families.
The facility, at 507 Leon Sullivan Way, provides services for military veterans experiencing homelessness.
Artist Nichole Westfall, whose father was in the Army National Guard, designed the bench, which was unveiled Wednesday afternoon.
The seat has a checkerboard pattern, representing grave sites of soldiers, Westfall said. On the backrest of the bench, vases of poppies represent veterans and their sacrifices. Dandelions represent the children of veterans. Yellow stripes on the flower vases represent the love of a military spouse.
“This bench not only enhances our space, it offers a place of reflection for our community,†said Bruce Purnell, the program manager at Veterans Lifeway Center.
