The Christmas season kicked on ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä's West Side Thursday morning.
For nearly 20 years, the Mountain Mission has held a Christmas thrift sale to benefit their Christmas Food Basket program. It runs through Saturday.
"Last year we broke $30,000" in sales, said John Roberts, executive director of the Mountain Mission. "We have over 50 Christmas trees and over 40,000 items."
"We have people calling three months in advance to confirm the [Christmas] sale dates to schedule vacation to come shopping with us," Roberts said.
For 99 years, the Mountain Mission has assisted local families in the Greater Kanawha Valley with their immediate emergency needs including food, utility assistance, furniture, etc. Roberts said the Mountain Mission's Christmas Food Basket program is their biggest event of the year, supplying more than 1,000 families a full Christmas meal each holiday season. The baskets include a turkey, canned food, potatoes and dessert.
"Celebrating Christmas is important to us," Roberts said.
The Mountain Mission is a faith-based nonprofit.Â
"We try to share the love of Christ with the distribution of the food baskets."
