Appalachian Power plans to upgrade the electric transmission system in Kanawha County and is seeking public input on the project.
The Cabin Creek-Cedar Grove Transmission Line Rebuild Project involves relocating roughly four miles of the 46-kilovolt (kV) transmission line in an area north of its current location.
The proposed upgrades begin in Cabin Creek and continue northeast, ending near Cedar Grove. The project involves the construction of 135-foot-tall lattice structures, requiring a right-of-way width of 100 feet, according to information provided by the power company.
According to a release issued by Appalachian Power, relocating the line to a more stable and accessible location will allow crews to better maintain the power line, replace aging infrastructure and address stress on the system during periods of peak demand by bringing in modern equipment.
Components of the project are mandated by PJM Interconnection, which serves as the regional transmission organization that monitors the electric grid in 13 states, including West Virginia.
Landowners are invited to attend a virtual open house at AppalachianPower.com/CabinCreekCedar to learn more about the project and provide feedback to the project team. The deadline to provide a comment is Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Landowners within the study area can expect to receive a mailed packet that includes additional project details and a map of the project area. Additionally, right-of-way agents representing Appalachian Power plan to reach out to landowners within the study area to discuss the project.
“We want to ensure we are working closely with the communities that live here to discuss route options and gather input to minimize impacts,†said Appalachian Power spokesperson George Porter.
The project requires the approval of the Public Service Commission. Appalachian Power plans to file an application with the PSC in 2024, according to the company’s release. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2025 and be completed by January 2027.
