Hector Falcon made Saturday’s 52nd ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Distance Run the latest stop on the path to a bigger goal — the Chicago Marathon.
The St. Albans resident shaved nearly two minutes off his 2024 finish in the 15-mile race to cross the finish line in 1:19:53.61 to take first place. It came on the heels of a win in Parkersburg in the News and Sentinel Half Marathon on Aug. 16.
“I trained a little bit better to get ready for the Chicago Marathon,†said Falcon, whose 1:21:37.19 put him in second place last year.
Falcon’s time this year was a personal best, he said.
Thomas Guidotti of Bellbrook, Ohio, took second place with a time of 1:20:18.39, while Zachary Holtkamp of Alexandria, Kentucky, came in third at 1:22:27.12.
All runners began the race near the capitol building on Kanawha Boulevard, then embarked on a trek through ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä’s neighborhoods before finishing on the track behind the east end zone at University of ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Stadium at Laidley Field.
Many of the runners in all three races – the 15-miler, the 5K and the 15-mile team relay – posed for pictures and took selfies with the finish line and State Capitol in the background.
Jenny Brewer of St. Marys posted the top women’s time in the 15-miler, crossing the finish line in 1:40:02.42. That time was good for 22nd.
Carmen Camino Falcon from ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä took second among women with a time of 1:43:55.14. Sarah Glenn of Roanoke, Virginia, took third in 1:46:24.79.
Robbie Brown’s time of 17:51.10 was good to take first place for the ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä resident in the 5K race. J.R. Sharp, also from ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä, took second with a time of 18:45.60 and Hurricane’s Jeremy Wolfe came in third in 18:50.77.
Emer Carrington of Dunbar took first among the women in the 5K race with a time of 21:26.77, good for seventh overall.
ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä’s Samantha Kumar came in second with a time of 22:56.38 and Baylee Adkins of South ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä was third at 23:37.28.
