Rivalry games take center stage as conference play continues in Tri-State high school football.
Welcome back to “At the Game,†a feature we're producing on high school football game nights to keep readers in the loop of what's going on across the area, in as close to real time as we can manage.
Nitro and Herbert Hoover have established themselves amongst the top of the Cardinal Conference of late. They’ll hook up on Friday night in Elkview, while Spring Valley and Huntington renew acquaintances in one of the fiercest rivalries in the Tri-State.
St. Albans-Riverside, George Washington-Cabell Midland and Parkersburg-Hurricane are Mountain State Athletic Conference fixtures set for Friday. Mingo Central-Wayne is no longer a Cardinal Conference showdown, with both having vacated the league, but they figure to play to a rousing atmosphere, both looking to protect undefeated starts. Winfield and South ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä isn't a rivalry game, per se, but has some interesting storylines in play.
Friday's final scores
- Herbert Hoover 15, Nitro 14

Riverside on its way
The Warriors lead 37-0 over St. Albans through three quarters. With the running clock in motion, Riverside is well on its way to its first win of the season.
Nitro retakes the lead
Takye Porter with a 90-yard punt return at 10:08 of the fourth quarter gives Nitro a 14-12 lead. It's their second lead of the game and first since Porter made it a 7-6 game back in the first quarter.
Huntington High 38, Spring Valley 7
Highlanders improve to 2-1. Timberwolves dip to 1-2.
It's up and it's good!

Highlanders extend lead to 28-7

Tide increases lead over Warriors
Sherman leads Pocahontas County 32-0 as the fourth quarter gets underway at Zontini Field after the Tide's Levi Sprouse scored a 1-yard rushing touchdown and Parkar Platt returned a fumble 6 yards to paydirt in the third period.
Generals take huge lead to halftime
The Winfield Generals go into halftime ahead 28-0 thanks to four total touchdowns by quarterback Jared Miller.
Miller's fourth touchdown came as he hooked up with wideout Pierce Worline for a 33-yard score.
Another Okonkwo scores for Huntington High
After Travon Okonkwo scored twice, his brother Mayshaun got into the act with a 51-yard sprint around right end and down the home sideline to paydirt. Bennett Weimer's extra point sent Huntington High into halftime up 21-7 over Spring Valley.Â
Winfield's Miller scores twice
Winfield quarterback Jared Miller scores from 4 yards out then another from 14 yards away, extending the Generals lead to 21-0 in the second quarter.
Sherman in command after slow start
Sherman and Pocahontas County were scoreless after one quarter on Friday night at Zontini Field.
However, 20 straight points from the Tide in the second via two touchdown connections from Eli Pauley to Trey Lester and a rushing score from Dawson Green have the hosts in control at halftime with a 20-0 advantage.
Huskies lead at halftime
Peyton Grigsby connected with Blake Fisher for a 41-yard TD pass with 3:25 to play in the first half that gave Herbert Hoover a 12-7 lead at halftime. A 2-point conversion try on the play brought on by a Nitro offside penalty on the extra point try convinced Husky coach Joey Fields to try for two.Â
The Grigsby to Fisher pass followed a Takye Porter 11-yard run that briefly gave the Wildcats the lead late in the first quarter.Â
Winfield in control early
Winfield quarterback Jared Miller connected with Drew Mann for a 15-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
The Generals are inside the SC red zone and are looking to extend the lead, as they're up 7-0 with 8:21 left in the second quarter.

Okonkwo goes 61 yards for tying TD
Huntington High ties Spring Valley 7-7 as Travon Okonkwo races 61 yards for a touchdown and Bennett Weimer boots the point-after. A game that started sloppy with a fumble and multiple penalties suddenly has become interesting. 3:37 left in the first quarter.Â
Spring Valley bullies its way to a lead
Zeke Lewis scored on a 6-yard touchdown run to cap an 11-play, 74-yard drive, all on the ground. Brady Chesire kicked the extra point to give Spring Valley a 7-0 lead over Huntington High.
Huskies strike first
Blake Fisher with a 4-yard TD run on Herbert Hoover's first drive made it 6-0 and Nitro blocked the extra point with 8:04 to play in the opening period.
