WINFIELD — Cameron Wallace pitched five innings of one-hit baseball, and his Winfield Generals teammates turned on the offense in a 13-0 shutout of Poca on Monday.
Wallace struck out six in earning the complete-game win while getting an RBI at the plate to help Winfield improve to 2-1 on the season.
At the plate, the Generals were led by Braycen Downey, who was 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs in the game. Ean Cox chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance with a double and two RBIs. Preston Keiffer was 1 for 3 with two batted in.
Carson Jones recorded the lone hit for the visiting Dots (1-3) with a single in his only official at bat. He also walked.
Winfield struck for three runs in the bottom of the first, added two more in the second and then four runs in both the third and fourth innings.
The run rule was in effect for the fifth inning.
Softball
WINFIELD 9, SISSONVILLE 1: Mattie Carroll struck out 11 batters on Monday to lead the Generals to a prep softball win at Sissonville.
Carroll allowed one earned run and two hits to SHS while the Generals banged out 16 hits to improve to 4-0 on the season with a five-inning run-rule win.
Emeri Nelson led Winfield (4-0) at the plate, going 4 for 4, scoring a pair of runs and driving in one. Ava Robinson was 3 for 3 with an RBI. Rylee McClellan was 3 for 4 and an RBI. Carroll was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Sissonville (2-2) was led by Allyson Jarrett, who ended the shutout bid with a solo home run in the fourth to go 1 for 2.
Jaidyn Taylor also was 1 for 2.
Saturday baseball
RIPLEY 13, INDEPENDENCE 3: A five-run first inning was enough to propel the Vikings to a 13-3 home win over the visiting Patriots in a high school baseball game Saturday.
Independence (0-1) led 1-0 when head coach Shane Casto’s team came to bat in the bottom of the first and Ripley (1-2) scored all five earned runs against Patriots starting pitcher Cole Cunningham. The Vikings also compiled runs against two other Independence pitchers for eight earned runs on 13 hits.
Ripley had a game-high three hits, including a double, from Kyler Doss, who also led the Vikings with three RBIs. Jackson Curry was 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs.
Zachary McCoy had two RBIs and a double for the Vikings.
Degan Williams led Independence with two hits and an RBI that gave the Patriots their first run. Orion Willis also had an RBI single while Reid Warden was 1 for 2 with an RBI.
Curry was the winning pitcher for Ripley with two earned runs allowed on four hits in four innings with three strikeouts. Cunningham took the loss.
CABELL MIDLAND 17, ASHLAND (KY.) 6: Owen Maynard and Ethan Hatcher each collected three hits for the Knights to help the team to a five-inning win over the visiting Tomcats in Ona.
Both Maynard and Hatcher were 3 for 3 at the plate and each led the Knights (2-0) with three RBIs. Hatcher had a double in the game as did Landon Nida, Cam Wallace and Cade Johnson.
Ethan Eaves had a triple for his only hit of the game but batted in two. Johnson also had a pair of RBIs in the game. Braylon Wing was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Knights.
Chandler Kisor had a pair of hits for Ashland (2-1) with two RBIs.
Saturday softball
WINFIELD 10, POINT PLEASANT 1: Coach Steve Hensley’s Generals improved to 3-0 in defense of their two Class AA state championships with a five-inning win over the Black Knights.
Four Winfield players had multihit games. Evie Loyd was 2-4 with an RBI, with Brooklyn Cole, Kenlie Zigmond and Mattie Carroll each going 2 for 3. Cole and Zigmond each had two RBIs.
Loyd had a triple while Cole had two doubles and Emeri Nelson had one.
Carroll, Ella Black and Ava Robinson each had an RBI. Robinson was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run on eight hits and striking out two, to improve to 1-0.
Point Pleasant was led by Josie Shobe, who was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Callie Hall was 2 for 2 with a double for the Knights.
