Prep boys basketball: Logan coaching icon Willie Akers dead at 89

Akers is most known for coaching at Logan High School, where he won four state basketball times, coming in 1964, 1977, 1978 and 1983.

The former coaching giant also got the Wildcats to the state title game another four times. He finished his coaching career with a record of 402-116.

Akers lettered at West Virginia University between 1958-60, and he was a member of the 1959 national runner-up team that lost to Cal in the title game.

He was inducted into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, and the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

Akers played basketball at Mullens High School, where he was a two-time all-state selection. He helped lead the Rebels to the state championship game in 1955.
