The Hurricane golf team’s win on Thursday at the Maddox Potter Capital City Classic gave the squad its first outright win in the Tri-State Cup and gave it sole possession of first place in the 2025 cup standings.
Hurricane tied University in the first leg of the 2025 Tri-State Cup with 25 points at the West Virginia Army National Guard Invitational at Glade Springs Resort near Beckley on Wednesday but took sole possession of first place after coach Sam O’Dell’s squad received 30 points for the win on Thursday at Edgewood Country Club.
The was the second decisive win for the team following its win in the Duke Ridgley Invitational on Aug. 4 at Guyan Golf & Country Club near Huntington.
Led by sophomore Isaac Hayes’ score of 68, putting him at 3-under par at the Maddox Potter Capital City Classic, Hurricane’s four golfers easily outpaced the field of 28 competing teams. HHS shot 212, 1-under par.
“[Isaac] had a good summer,†O’Dell said. “He continues to improve. I was throwing [winning the Maddox Potter tournament] out there as a goal for the guys. There are enough tough shots out [at Edgewood] to make it a good test on a golfer.â€
Individually, O’Dell’s sons, senior Carson and sophomore Parker, placed third and tied for fifth, respectively, at the tournament, Carson shooting an even-par 71, and Parker a 73 along with Chapmanville’s Justus Mann and Cabell Midland’s Wyatt Maynard. Senior Bryce Davis shot 80.
“I felt great,†said Hayes. “Putting was a little off but I gave myself great looks and made a few so that was fun. After like 15 holes I knew I should finish at the top.â€
Cabell Midland finished second with a 226 followed by Chapmanville at 233.
Parkersburg South’s Cam Fallon shot a 69 to finish at 1-under and one stroke back of Hayes. ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Catholic’s Will Gruse took fourth at 1-over.

Hurricane is attempting to win its third consecutive Tri-State Cup; it would be the second time HHS has had three straight wins (2007-09).
TOURNAMENT REBRAND: Coach O’Dell reflected on Hurricane winning the first Capital City Classic named in honor of George Washington student Maddox Potter, who died in January from cancer at 16 years old.
O’Dell said he wanted his team of four in the tournament to focus on having fun playing and not taking the tournament too seriously.
“Before we started, I said, ‘Boys, don’t anybody get mad. Just think when you hit a bad shot, or heck, hit a good shot, just think how much how much Maddox wishes he was here. Think of the family and how lucky we are to be here.’â€
