ONA — Nicole Harris and Baylee Smith paced a potent Cabell Midland attack Monday, sparking the Knights to a 10-2, run-rule win over Winfield at Paul Adams Field.
Harris, who leads off, and Smith, No. 3 in the order, each went 4 for 4 and the Knights finished with 15 total hits in just five innings. Hayla Norris added a 3-hit day and also drove in a team-high four runs.
“Keep it going until the middle of May,†Knights coach Herman Beckett said. “That ball looks like a marshmallow or something. Hacking pretty good. We’ll take it.â€
Cabell Midland (15-2) is ranked No. 2 in West Virginia Class AAAA in the latest MetroNews poll. Winfield (15-6) checks in second in Class AAA.
“They’re very good,†Generals coach Steve Hensley said. “We didn’t play poorly. We probably should’ve executed things a little better. We were close to getting out of a couple of innings. Two-out hits. They’re big at any level. They got a lot.â€
Rylee McClellan had an RBI single for the Generals in the first. Starting pitcher Emeri Nelson belted a solo homer in the third. After that, Cabell Midland starter Drea Watts settled down.
“Drea pitched a good game,†Beckett said. “After she gave up that homer, she settled down. Hard and tough after that. She’s done that a couple of times this year. Teams score early and never do anything else.â€
Watts allowed four hits and two runs (one earned), struck out eight and walked none.
Nelson went three innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits. Ava Robinson came on for the final two innings.
“Pitchers threw strikes. Did what they had to do,†Hensley said. “We just didn’t get out of a couple of innings.â€
Winfield returns to action Tuesday against Class AAA No. 1 Herbert Hoover. The Generals won the first meeting. They then meet Point Pleasant on Thursday and Ripley on Friday.
Cabell Midland’s next game is Tuesday at Greenup County. The Musketeers had a 12-3 mark going into Monday’s game at Lawrence County. The Knights have a big road game Saturday against Parkersburg South (13-5), which is No. 4 in Class AAAA.
“Baylee had an outstanding game catching and hitting,†Beckett said. “They played smart. That’s what I liked.â€
Hensley said he made the pitching change to give Nelson a break.
“She threw five innings Saturday,†Hensley said. “She’s not had a lot of innings this year. Don’t want to overwork her.â€
Cabell Midland batters worked six walks and also stole four bases.
