GRADUATE: Addley Marinacci, daughter of J.B. and Jennifer Marinacci, graduated with honors from Hurricane High School. While a student there, she was a member of the Dance Team, National Honor and National English Honor societies, Mu Alpha Theta, Link Crew, Book Club and Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy. She plans to study accounting and finance at University of Kentucky. Congratulations Addley on this accomplishment and best wishes for a successful future.
CARS/BINGO: The first annual car show and purse bingo is hosted by Capital High School in ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 26. Proceeds benefit the school’s athletic department. Car enthusiasts showcase vehicles and compete for awards in categories, including best modified, best classic, best lady owned, best truck, best bike, best Import, best modern, and best of show Cougar Award. Food trucks and vendor stalls are also available. The day concludes with purse bingo, which offers brand-name purses as prizes, with 200 available spots to participants.
NEW COACH: The assistant basketball coach at Hurricane High School has run up the floor of the basketball court to now boys' basketball coach at the Putnam County school. Dana Womack, also assistant coach at Nitro High School and St. Albans High School from 2021-23, is ready for a winning season. Good luck Coach Womack.
CONTESTS: Bammy's Chili Dogs and St. Albans Parks and Recreation Department offer a family-friendly event consisting of a hot dog eating contest at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Bammy's, followed by a cornhole tournament at 6 p.m. Entry fee for hot dog eaters is $15, with a $250 total cash prize pool. Entry fee for the cornhole participants is $20 per team with cash payouts to top two finishers. Live music provided by John Harrison and Co. is available from 6-8 p.m. A bounce house fun for kids is also offered. SPELLER: Charvitha Sanjaya, 14, enters ninth grade at George Washington High School this coming year. As an eighth grader, she competed her last time in the spelling bee at John Adams Middle School, competitor since fifth grade, but first time in making to nationals of the 100th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee at Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, National Harbor, Maryland. in Washington, D.C., in late May. Congratulations on fulfilling these milestones.
MACBETH: Putnam County Library promotes "the Rustic Mechanicals 2025 Vaulting Ambition Tour of William Shakespeare in the Park: Macbeth" at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Valley Park, Hurricane, West Virginia. Since the event is conducted outdoors, attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. Admission is free.
BOWLERS: Four Nitro High School and Town N County Lanes bowlers recently qualified for the Junior Gold Championships in Green Bay, Wisconsin, earlier this month. Nitro High School bowlers were Lucas Miller, Cash Roberts, Memphis Derrick and Gaige Jenkins. Four others -- Trevor Hudson, Bree Cummings, Dekari Leftwich and Jimmy Roop -- are affiliated with the youth league at Galaxy Lanes in Kanawha City. Here's hoping the bowlers came home with the trophy.
BOARD MEMBER: Chad Riley, PE, vice president of business development with the Thrasher Group in ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä, was one of 10 new members welcomed into the board of directors with Advantage Valley, a nine-county regional economic development organization. Although serving in various roles with the group, he currently oversees high-level operations across the company, specializing in industrial, business and multi-use developments. He graduated from Fairmont State University with an engineering degree. Congratulations on being named to the board of directors.
HONORED: One more award was recently added to the trophy case of Ty Steorts, a Hurricane High School runner. He was named by Gatorade as the boys track and field Player of the Year for West Virginia. This is his first award for track success. He also won the McCoy Male Track and Field Athlete Award from West Virginia Sports Writers Association with a time of 14:11.48 in Class AAA cross country championship in the fall competition, which made his third straight Class AAA individual title. In May, he was state championships by winning the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. The time of 4:06.34 in the 1600 broke a meet record, making him the 16th-best time in the nation. Keep on running, Ty, and breaking records.
CHUCKLE: Jimmy's mom had hung clothes on the outside line to dry. After playing with the dog in the mud, he was riding his bike. After a while, he felt all the clothes with his muddy hands. His mom came out to check on them, looking disgusted. Jimmy said, "The clothes are dry, Mommy. I felt them all."
