Photo Contest: The ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Convention & Visitors Bureau is sponsoring a photo contest focusing on outdoor recreation in Kanawha County. The public is encouraged to share images of outdoor adventures, including hiking, biking, fishing, trail running, kayaking and boating. To qualify, photos must be of activities in Kanawha County. The contest runs through June 30. Prizes will be awarded for the top three photos. The First-Place winner gets an outdoor-themed gift basket with a $100 local gift certificate/card. Second place wins a $50 local gift certificate/card, and third place wins a $25 local gift certificate/card. A winner will be chosen within 15 days of the contest end date, as long as at least 20 photos have been submitted. Winners will be selected by the ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä CVB. EERC Wednesday: The East End Resource Center Senior Program is held at the Roosevelt Center, 502 Ruffner Ave., ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä, from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The June 4 program will insights into Social Security given by Jane Marks. EERC Friday: The East End Resource Center Senior Friday Program on June 6 will have a noon Silver Sneakers Class in the third-floor dance room of the Roosevelt Center followed by a 1 p.m. lunch. Run/Walk: Registration is open for the annual CAMC Foundation Run For Your Life run/walk to raise awareness for colorectal cancer. The race will start at 8 a.m. on June 7. The 5-mile run and 2.5 mile walk begins at Haddad Riverfront Park, takes runners and walkers through the streets of ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä and returns to the park to finish. Summerfest: The annual Ken Ellis Memorial Park Summerfest will be June 7 from noon to 4 p.m. The park is located about 3 miles up Campbells Creek across from Northeast Ballfield. There will be live music, craft and direct seller vendors, carnival games, food vendors, animal exhibits, a farmers’ market and more. The entertainment lineup is Nashville recording artist Tina Stevens and Rob Ciarapica with DJ service provided by Nashville recording artist Kris Allen. Music and Dance: The Hansford Senior Center at 500 Washington St. in St. Albans will host live music and a dance June 7. Doors open at 5 p.m., and Restless will perform from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is $6. Concessions available for purchase.
Sports Physical: The CAMC Teays Valley Outpatient Center at 3948 Teays Valley Rd. will offer a free sports physical clinic June 7 from 8 a.m. to noon. Students must bring a sports physical form provided by their school and signed by a parent or guardian. Forms will be available at the clinic, but must be signed by a parent/guardian at the clinic.
Outdoor Club: Poca River Hunting, Fishing, and Recreation Club located at 789 Dupont Road at Poca will be open to the public for a fun day of events June 7 from 10 a.m. to closing. Free to all. There will be multiple vendors, raffles, kids zone with games, swimming, and live music from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Activities include an archery tournament, paid fishing tournament, and a side-by-side giveaway with ticket purchase. The Club will have food available on site to eat throughout the day. Bring your chairs, blankets, swimming gear and fishing rod. Several gun/rifle ranges will be available. This is a great opportunity to see what PRHFRC has available.
Lunch & Learn: City of Hope Fellowship will host a lunch and program for seniors on June 10 at 11:30 a.m. to learn more about Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley. Jennifer Waggener will discuss service programs for eligible older adults, including transportation for medical appointments, help with grocery shopping, minor home repairs and more. Family Fun Bash: The ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Ballet and the Hamrick family are celebrating the start of summer with a Family Fun Bash June 14 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be food, games, music and dance. Majestic Mountains Needle Arts: Anyone interested in using a needle to create hand stitched items, is encouraged to attend MMNA meetings. Members include beginning stitchers to accomplished artists specializing in a wide variety of needlework. Join us at our next meeting for fun, friendship, and a shared love of stitching. MMNA meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, June 19, at the Dunbar Public Library, 301 12th Street, Dunbar. Members and visitors are invited to gather as early as 5 p.m. to visit or enjoy open stitching prior to the meeting. Summer Library Club: The Kanawha County Public Library’s Summer Library Club will run through July 31. The theme is “Color Our World!” The goal is to develop and build literacy skills for young readers and a love of reading for all ages. Meals on Wheels: The St. Francis Meals on Wheels program needs volunteers to work one day a week for about one and half hours, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. We deliver meals to homebound people, whether they be elderly, convalescing, handicapped or chronically ill, regardless of age. This program is not affiliated with the state.
