State workers will get a four-day weekend this week as Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced Tuesday afternoon they "will be excused from work" on Thursday ahead of the July Fourth holiday on Friday.
This comes less than a month after Morrisey chose not to give state workers June 19 off for the Juneteenth holiday ahead of West Virginia Day, a state holiday, on June 20. Juneteenth is a federal holiday and has been observed in past years as a holiday in the Mountain State, but it is not an official state holiday.
Morrisey recognized Juneteenth with a proclamation but also did not pay for any state-sponsored Juneteenth events, "due to the continued fiscal challenges facing West Virginia," the governor's office said at the time.
Other area closures
West Virginia University: In light of Morrisey's announcement Tuesday, WVU officials also extended the holiday weekend with the day off for students and most employees. Student tours will continue as scheduled on Thursday, WVU said in a news release, and "certain employees will be contacted by their supervisor with additional information regarding a holiday work schedule to support ongoing campus services."
Marshall University: Summer session final exams are already scheduled for Thursday requiring the university to stay open, officials said Wednesday in a release. But Marshall will observe the extra holiday on Monday. Some essential campus services will remain open on Monday, and affected employees should consult with their supervisor for direction, according to the release.
City of ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä: City offices will be closed on Thursday, but there will be no changes to the refuse collection schedule.
Kanawha County Courthouse: The Courthouse will also be closed on Thursday, according to a news release, but essential public safety services — including the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office and Metro 911 — will continue to operate.
West Virginia Judicial System: All courts in the West Virginia Judicial System will be closed Thursday, according to a news release from the Supreme Court of Appeals in West Virginia. Included in the order are the Intermediate Court of Appeals as well as magistrate, family and circuit court offices statewide.
