Manna Meal will resume its indoor feeding program Saturday, but not at its longtime home at St. John’s Episcopal Church downtown. According to a news release Thursday evening, Manna Meal will begin serving meals at the former Garnet Career Center, located at 422 Dickinson St., on Saturday.
Breakfast will be served from 7:30-9 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The feeding center can be accessed from the building’s Shrewsbury Street side entrance.
“This move has been made possible through the tireless efforts of our staff and volunteers, the enduring commitment of our community partners, and the leadership of our board,†the statement read. “We are profoundly grateful to the City of ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä and the Garnet Foundation’s willingness to meet the needs of the community, and for the collaborative spirit of resilience, hope, and nonjudgement that defines Manna Meal and continues to fuel our mission.â€
Manna Meal’s board of directors executive committee moved to suspend indoor feeding services at St. John’s in early November, after a man was arrested near Sacred Heart Grade School. The school is located across Leon Sullivan Way from St. John’s.
The man did frequent Manna Meal, but had not eaten at the facility on the day of the incident, Manna Meal executive director Amy Wolfe told the Gazette-Mail earlier this month.
Chuck Hamsher, chairman of the Manna Meal board of directors, and vice chairman Marc Slotnick resigned in the wake of the decision to suspend services at St. John’s.
After stopping meals at St. John’s, Manna Meal served meals out of its food truck. The release did not indicate if those mobile services would be continued.
