The third day of the ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Public Courts tennis tournament on Monday settled the Round of 32 in the Open Men’s singles bracket.
Six players advanced to the Round of 16, which will begin on Tuesday with the first matches in the bracket scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at the ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Tennis Club. The slate will include No. 1 seed Patrick Walker.
Walker, who received a bye in the Round of 32, will face Chris Peacock on Tuesday at 5 p.m. for a spot in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Peacock, who was among those who advanced on Monday with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kalel Chattin.
Other winners included No. 3 and former George Washington Patriots player Alex Stacy who advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 win over ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Catholic sophomore Winston Hunter.
“I grew up playing in this club when I was 3 or 4,†said Stacy, who played collegiately at Fairmont State. Stacy’s appearance in the tournament marks his return to ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Public Courts after three years away.
“It feels great,†Stacy said of playing in the tournament again. “I’m so happy to be back. I prioritized being in town for this week. I feel good about this year.â€
Stacy was impressive in his win over Hunter, making his first appearance in the Men’s Open singles tournament. The Class A individual boys’ runner-up for Catholic’s state championship team as a freshman said he knew he was facing a tough challenge.
“He doesn't miss, and he gets to everything,†Hunter said.
Other Men’s Open singles winners on Monday were James McIntosh, who defeated Joseph Michael 6-1, 6-1.
Alex Gracin defeated Rohen Jones 7-5, 6-1 to advance. Alex Michael defeated Ethan Shepard 6-2, 6-4 and Alec Foote defeated Gabe Conley 6-0, 6-0.
Matches in the Men’s Open singles tournament on Tuesday will also include Noah Fulks and Rico Williams in a scheduled 6:30 p.m. start. Fulks won during Saturday’s first day of the tournament while Williams beat Luke Tankersley on Sunday.
Samir Jones and Jason Prince are scheduled for a 6 p.m. start. McIntosh will play Foote at 7 p.m. while Michael will play second-seeded James Kent in a match also scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
All quarterfinal matches will be on Wednesday where Stacy will face the Fulks-Williams winner for a possible matchup with Walker. Stacy said it would be a chance to play against the man who trained him.
“One guy I definitely got my eye on is Pat Walker,†said Stacy. “That’s my coach pretty much my whole life and it would definitely be a lot of fun to play him.â€
Walker and Stacy must both advance to the semifinals on Thursday to play each other. Standing in Stacy’s way is Ryan Mullins.
Mullins defeated recent ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Catholic graduate Nicholas Giatras, who won the individual Class A boys’ state championship this past season.
“He’s a great player,†Stacy said of Mullins. “We actually play a lot for fun. It’s always competitive when we play so I expect a battle for sure.â€
