"I saw 10 other guys doing their job, trusting each other, and I was going to be able to do mine," Kee said of the fumble recovery. "It was either Kell [Taylor] or Ty [Mullins] came in and punched the ball out. I scooped it up."
Nitro had driven to the Huskies 18 when the ball squirted out of a pile and Kee returned it 16 yards. A Peyton Grigsby to Kno’sean Hampton pass for 37 yards put Hoover deep in Nitro territory, where Duernberger eventually put Hoover ahead for good.
"Our kids are tough, and they found a way to respond and win," Herbert Hoover coach Joey Fields said. "We'll probably see [Nitro] again. We don't want to, but that's just the likelihood of it."
The Huskies (2-1) took a 6-0 lead after their first possession of the game on Blake Fisher's 4-yard run, but Nitro blocked Duernberger's point-after.Â
Nitro (2-1) finally got a drive going late in the first period and Takye Porter capped it with an 11-yard run that gave the Wildcats a 7-6 lead at the 1:11 mark of the opening quarter.
Midway through the second quarter, Hoover got the ball back and it took the Huskies six plays to regain the lead. Grigsby avoided Nitro's defensive pressure long enough to find Fisher along the sideline, and he turned upfield for a 41-yard TD that gave the Huskies the lead back with 3:25 to go in the first half.
Hoover would take that 12-7 lead into halftime.
The two teams were scoreless in the third quarter. Early in the fourth, Porter seemed to make the play that would give Nitro its third victory in as many games.
