Beginning as a school cook in 1970, Ellen Carter, also known as Miss Carter to those she serves, has cooked in the same building for more than 50 years.

The Rand Community Center, housed in the former Rand Elementary school building in the Upper Kanawha Valley of Kanawha County, is where Carter now prepares meals for seniors coming from varying Kanawha County communities.
