Vintage WV: Chessie System rail workers

Rail workers put finishing touches on the 5,000th mile of Chessie System’s modern continuous-welded rail that was spiked into position today in ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä. The afternoon ceremony on Chessie System tracks across from Morris Harvey College marked the first such milestone in the eastern United States. Curtis Spencer Jones of Lousia, Ky., a 64-year-old spiking machine operator hand-drove the final spike. Feb. 5, 1975, photo by Earl Benton.
