HD Media LLC is expanding its digital and print publishing footprint with the acquisition of more than two-dozen properties from AIM Media and AIM Media Midwest located in Indiana and Ohio.
The purchase, effective Aug. 31, increases HD Media’s portfolio to 35 total publications spread over three states.
“We aren't buying newspapers because we're nostalgic for the way the world used to be,†HD Media Managing Partner Doug Reynolds said. “We're buying them because we believe community newspapers have a future.â€
Among the newspapers included in the purchase are The Bryan Times, The Lima News, the Daily Citizen (Urbana), the Xenia Daily Gazette and the Northwest Signal (Napoleon) in Ohio; and the Daily Journal (Franklin), the Daily Reporter (Greenfield) and The Republic (Columbus) in Indiana.
All told, HD Media is acquiring 25 publications serving communities across west-central Ohio and southeastern Indiana.
“As an organization, we have been working on these acquisitions for nearly a year,†said HD Media President Phil Perry. “Our entire organization is committed to transitioning community journalism into an exciting future that presents technological advances which empowers us to reach readers via multiple platforms. Additionally, this extended footprint gives us a robust advertising presence regionally.â€
The Ohio group, which previously operated under the AIM Media Midwest umbrella, includes 19 titles: The Lima News (Lima), Sidney Daily News (Sidney), Miami Valley Today (Troy and Piqua), The Bryan Times (Bryan), Sentinel-Tribune (Bowling Green), Urbana Daily Citizen (Urbana), Wilmington News Journal (Wilmington), Northwest Signal (Napoleon), The Daily Advocate and Early Bird (Greenville and Darke County), Xenia Daily Gazette (Xenia), Record Herald (Washington Court House and Fayette County), Delaware Gazette (Delaware), The Times-Gazette (Hillsboro and Highland County), The Register-Herald (Eaton), Morrow County Sentinel (Mount Gilead), Galion Inquirer (Galion), Fairborn Daily Herald (Fairborn) and Beavercreek News-Current (Beavercreek).

The Indiana operation, previously part of AIM Media, includes six publications: The Republic (Columbus), Daily Journal (Franklin); Daily Reporter (Greenfield); The Tribune (Seymour); Brown County Democrat (Nashville); and The Times-Post (Pendleton).
The newspapers represent a mix of daily, weekly and bi-weekly publications.
“Some of these publications have earned the trust of their communities for more than 200 years,†Reynolds said. “We have worked with our friends at AIM Media for years and know first-hand their commitment to quality journalism. Our philosophy is simple: think globally and act locally. We can provide the resources of a larger organization, but these newspapers must continue to belong to the communities they serve.â€
HD Media, headquartered in ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä, currently operates 10 newspapers, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä Gazette-Mail and The Herald-Dispatch in Huntington. Other weekly publications in the Mountain State include the Wayne County News; Lincoln Sentinel; Lincoln Journal; Coal Valley News; Logan Banner; Putnam Herald; and Williamson Daily News.
The company also publishes the bi-weekly Portsmouth Daily Times in Portsmouth, Ohio. HD Media acquired the PDT from AIM Media in 2023.
“We found a partner in AIM Media when we purchased the Portsmouth Daily Times three years ago and as that relationship grew stronger, we felt comfortable negotiating a large acquisition like this with them,†Perry said.
In addition to the AIM acquisitions, HD Media also announced a change in print frequency for The Herald-Dispatch. Beginning with the Sept. 8 edition, The Herald-Dispatch will produce print editions on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The newspaper’s digital platforms will continue to be updated daily.
