Universities are built over generations. Every so often, however, there comes a moment when years of thoughtful planning, disciplined execution, and a shared commitment to a common purpose begin to accelerate. The University of ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä is experiencing one of those moments.
The numbers tell part of the story. Today, UC serves more than 3,000 students, our largest student body in over half a century and double our enrollment from 15 years ago.
It happened because we stayed focused on what students need: career-relevant programs, personal attention, flexible delivery and a clear path from the classroom to a meaningful life and career.
The recognition tells another part. The education publication Niche has named UC the best college in West Virginia based on direct student feedback. Business Insider found that UC undergraduates lead all West Virginia schools in early-career earnings. We are designated a Top Yellow Ribbon School by U.S. Veterans Magazine. And Gallup research shows our students have the college experiences that matter most after graduation at rates far above the national average. To wit, over three-quarters said their professors cared about them as a person, compared to 27% nationally.
Those accomplishments are not isolated successes. They are the result of a plan, and the discipline to stick to it.
Continuing success
This month, the University of ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä is launching its 2026-2030 Strategic Plan. It is our roadmap for the years ahead, built on the same vision, mission and values that have guided this institution for years.
The plan itself is straightforward. It reaffirms the mission that has guided UC for generations: educating students for lives of productive work, enlightened living and community involvement, rooted in our three core values of student focus, quality and integrity. And it commits the university to four goals through the remainder of the decade:
- Strengthening student success
- Investing in our employees
- Responsibly growing enrollment
- Ensuring the university's long-term sustainability
None of this is new. It is the same foundation that shaped UC under generations of wise board and executive leadership. Our responsibility is to build on that foundation and prepare the University for the opportunities ahead.
Across the country, colleges and universities face difficult choices. Demographic shifts, financial pressures, and changing workforce demands are forcing many institutions to reinvent themselves, and, in some cases, close altogether.
Stories you might like
Our plan is different, because UC does not need reinvention. Our model is working. The next five years are about doing more of what works, for more students, across West Virginia and beyond.
Visible results
You can already see what that looks like. In recent years we have launched or announced programs in:
- Artificial intelligence
- Family nurse practitioner
- Mental health counseling
- Nurse anesthesia
- Occupational therapy
- Physical therapy
These are fields where West Virginia needs talent now.
We serve students at our ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä campus, in Beckley and online, including more than 1,200 students who are military affiliated worldwide. Our students give back more than 6,000 hours of community service annually. And this year, we hosted the inaugural UC Marathon, a new tradition that brought campus and city together. That is what it means to be ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä's university.
The greatest strength of our planning process is that it belongs to the entire university. Students, faculty, staff, leadership, and board members all helped shape this plan through campus conversations and working sessions. When people help shape the future of an institution, they become invested in its success. The result is not simply a document. It is a community of champions with a shared commitment to moving the University forward.
This matters beyond our campus. Our graduates are West Virginia's nurses, physician assistants, rehabilitation therapists, analysts, cybersecurity experts, teachers, and business leaders. When UC grows, the state's workforce grows with it. A strong University of ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä is good for ÂÒÂ×ÄÚÉä and good for West Virginia.
Universities do not become exceptional through a single initiative or leader. They become exceptional when generations of people are united by a common purpose and committed to leaving the institution stronger than they found it. That is what our Strategic Plans, past, present, and future, represent.
Our plan builds on our momentum. It honors our mission. It reflects the voices of our university community. And it provides clear direction for the future. I invite you to read it at ucwv.edu/strategic-plan if you’re interested in what our future looks like.
