Zachary Winters — a Dunbar police officer named in multiple excessive force lawsuits — resigned Monday, according to Dunbar Police Chief John Garten.

Winters served with the department for about five years. During that time, he was named in two lawsuits involving Kanawha County residents that cost the city of Dunbar over $2.5 million. One case involved the death of Michael Scott Jr., who died from a skull fracture while in police custody.
